YWCA Crossroads Safe Haven Campaign TeamYWCA Crossroads Safe Haven Campaign

See a list of the proud, dedicated members of our Crossroads Safe Haven Campaign team.

The Government of Ontario has recognized the very urgent need for a new purpose-built shelter for abused women in our community. In partnering with the YWCA of Peterborough, Victoria and Haliburton through their substantial grant, the government has demonstrated their confidence in our YWCA and the Crossroads Safe Haven Campaign.

The Crossroads Safe Haven Campaign has the support and advice of caring and committed Community Advisors including Erica Cherney, Charlie Coffey, Goodith Heeney, Isabel & Jim Henniger, Sister Dorothy Ryan - Sisters of St Joseph, and Heather Stelzer.

The Campaign is led by co-chairs, Betty & Bill Morris and Vice-Chairs, Gail & Bill Lockington. Cabinet committee members include Dave Bignell, Ann Farquharson, Theresa Butler-Porter, Heather Avery, Olivia & Gord James, Annie & Richard Johnston, Shelley Knott Fife, Janet & Yves Lafortune, Jane Ulrich, Sandy Lawrence, retired Police Chief Terry McLaren and Kate Ramsay.

YWCA staff and Board and cabinet members and numerous Leadership Donors have already contributed substantially to this important Crossroads Safe Haven Campaign and over $2.7 million has been committed through cash and gifts in kind as of July, 2009.

Capable, experienced professional and volunteer staff are in place to manage and oversee the design and construction phases, including:

  • Kawartha Capital Construction, a local company builder with nine years experience
  • Trevelyan Architect
  • Joe Quintela, Project/Development Manager, principal of Joe Quintela & Associates, with over 17 years experience in development and construction of Shelters and Non Profit facilities.
  • Sandy Lawrence, Building Committee Chair. In her role as Director of Purchasing at Sir Sandford Fleming College, Ms. Lawrence was Project Leader for a number of significant building projects at SSFC, including construction of student residences in Peterborough and Lindsay.
  • Building committee volunteer members include: Dave Bignell, President & CEO, Siemens Milltronics Process Instruments Inc.; Bill Morris, President, The Stewart Group; Rob LaPlante, Director of Plant & Facilities, Lakefield College School; and Scott Smith, P.Eng, MBA.
  • Lynn Zimmer YWCA Executive Director. In 1973, prior to her role as E.D. for YWCA of Peterborough, Victoria & Haliburton, Lynn was one of the founders of Toronto's Interval House, the first shelter for abused women in Canada.
  • YW Crossroads staff have conducted site visits to several Ontario women's shelters and have been intimately involved in the planning phase to ensure purpose-driven design.
