History of Week Without Violence

YWCA - Week Without Violence

The YWCA’s Week Without Violence Campaign is a global initiative that was
established to encourage the promotion of practical and sustainable alternatives
to violence. It is our hope that this campaign will promote discussion and ignite
people’s imagination to the possibility of non-violence in our communities.

A YWCA in the United States originally introduced the Week Without Violence in
1995. It began as a response to the daily occurrences of violence. It challenged
men, women and children to live violence-free for one week. This initiative
quickly spread to Canada and around the world. Now in it’s thirteenth year in
Canada, the YWCA’s Week Without Violence is a story about hope – and how
we, as individuals, can take steps towards the attainment of peace.

Locally our committee has included over 20 members representing various
agencies and organizations throughout Peterborough City and County. The
number and types of activities and events planned each year is evidence of the
commitment and enthusiasm of the participants. In fact, the Peterborough
campaign is one of the largest in the country and is significant in that it addresses
many forms of violence in unique and innovative ways.

It is our hope that the Week Without Violence will continue to grow as more
people, from all sectors of the community, become involved in this important
work – not just for one week, but for a life time. This year we invite you to help
make violence a thing of the past.

One Week Without Violence – can you imagine it? Can you imagine a
lifetime? Let’s make it real!
